The calm waters, natural scenery and picturesque towns on the shores of the lakes of Europe create strikingly beautiful sceneries. Usually built on a slope that ends in the lake, the lakeside towns have a unique beauty advantage. When this is combined with great architecture and relatively mild housing intervention, the landscape becomes magical.

Three suns rose today in China http://www.mostweird.com/2011/01/three-suns-rose-today-in-china/ http://www.mostweird.com/2011/01/three-suns-rose-today-in-china/#comments Sun, 09 Jan 2011 23:21:07 +0000 BlueFlag http://www.mostweird.com/?p=7482 Three Suns appeared today in the city of Changchun, making the inhabitants of the city to look surprised at the celestial phenomenon.

The news immediately published to the Chinese media and people began to take photographs of the phenomenon. There was not, however, something inexplicable, but rather a phenomenon similar to that of the rainbow. As explained by Zheng Liu Jilin head of the local weather center is essentially an optical refraction of the atmosphere.

3 suns in China

«The rainbow is a natural phenomenon that occurs for similar reasons. What happened in this case is that due to the relatively high clouds shown in the winter, clouds are formed by ice crystals, forming a reflector device. When the sun rises, the rays of light hit this refraction, resulting in the formation of the phenomenon» said a Chinese meteorologist.

Great architecture in MIT Strata Center http://www.mostweird.com/2010/12/great-architecture-in-mit-strata-center/ http://www.mostweird.com/2010/12/great-architecture-in-mit-strata-center/#comments Wed, 08 Dec 2010 15:47:39 +0000 BlueFlag http://www.mostweird.com/?p=7454 The Ray and Maria Stata Center or Building 32 is a 720,000-square-foot (67,000 m2) academic complex designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The building opened for initial occupancy on March 16, 2004. It sits on the site of MIT’s former Building 20, which housed the historic Radiation Laboratory, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Major funding for this project was provided by Ray Stata (MIT class of 1957) and Maria Stata. Other major funders include Bill Gates, Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr. (MIT class of 1954), and Morris Chang of TSMC. Above the fourth floor, the building splits into two distinct structures: the Gates tower and the Dreyfoos tower.

Contained within the building are the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems, as well as the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy. Academic celebrities such as Noam Chomsky, Rodney Brooks and Ron Rivest have offices there. World Wide Web Consortium founder Tim Berners-Lee and free software movement founder Richard Stallman also have offices within.

Several MIT classes, including many taught by the computer science and electrical engineering department (Course VI) are held inside. The Forbes Family Café is also located in the Stata Center, serving coffee and lunch to the public.

In contrast to the trend at MIT of referring to buildings by their numbers rather than their official names, the complex is usually referred to as «Stata», or «the Stata Center». The two towers are often called «G Tower» and «D tower».

Matches for extreme conditions! http://www.mostweird.com/2010/12/matches-for-extreme-conditions/ http://www.mostweird.com/2010/12/matches-for-extreme-conditions/#comments Mon, 06 Dec 2010 19:12:22 +0000 BlueFlag http://www.mostweird.com/?p=7448 Unlike other matches that only have a wax coat over the sulfur to keep it «waterproof», these matches have more than half the stick covered in sulfur making it virtually impossible to snuff. These matches will burn in the most extreme conditions. Albeit highly unlikely that you would be able to start a fire in such conditions you can rest assured that the match itself will not fail.

We put the match through a couple torture tests pushing the most extreme climates of gale force winds, monsoon rain storms and the complete abscence of oxygen. Even burying the match in muddy water was not enough to stop the sulfur from burning.

The most boring day of the 20th century! http://www.mostweird.com/2010/12/the-most-boring-day-in-century/ http://www.mostweird.com/2010/12/the-most-boring-day-in-century/#comments Sat, 04 Dec 2010 15:26:33 +0000 BlueFlag http://perierga.gr/?p=6894 MostWeird.com - The most boring dayThe most boring day of the 20th century was 11th of April 1954!

Every day something of significance occurs, but nothing remarkable had happened on the said day in 1954, according to experts from Cambridge University, who inserted over 300 million important events of the century into a computer software to calculate.

Even if 20th century had many significant events such us two World Wars, many inventions, space travels and other important moments in history, nothing importand heppened that particular day!

«Nobody significant died that day, no major events apparently occurred and, although a typical day in the 20th century has many notable people being born, for some reason that day had only one who might make that claim – Abdullah Atalar, a Turkish academic,» Tunstall-Pedoe was quoted as saying by the Telegraph.

He said: «The irony is, though, that having done the calculation the day is interesting for being exceptionally boring. Unless, that is, you are Abdullah Atalar.»
